1. Depending on the reaction conditions, the hydrolysis of β-ethylthiocrotonaldehyde diethyl acetal leads either to β-ethylthiocrotonaldehyde or to methyl β-ethylthiovinyl ketone. 2. The 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones of β-ethylthiocrotonaldehyde and methyl β-ethylthiovinyl ketone when heated in an acid medium are respectively converted to the 5-methyl and 5-methyl derivatives of 1-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)pyrazole.
