Abstract
A case of right hydronephrosis and hydroureter is described as part of the course of a patient with Crohn's disease. The obstructive uropathy was secondary to a retrocecal abscess but did not produce physical signs or abnormal laboratory findings. The patient complained of pain in the right hip, which might suggest hydronephrosis. Hydronephrosis is probably a common but little recognized complication of Crohn's disease. This is most likely due to the paucity of clinical findings indicating urinary tract pathology in these cases. Its diagnostic importance lies in the fact that the presence of hydronephrosis is an absolute indication for surgical intervention in Crohn's disease. It is preferable in these cases that operation be performed during a quiescent stage of the disease.
