Abstract
In the framework of a radioactive waste disposal program we conducted a seismic experiment in an underground rock laboratory. For analyzing this data set, we developed a new model parameterization for vertically transversely isotropic (VTI) full waveform inversion (FWI) that is able to produce reliable subsurface images. We could further improve these inversion results by application of structural similarity constraints between different model parameter types. Application of the VTI FWI algorithm to our field data set shows that with seismic measurements we can detect a small (1 m diameter) tunnel within a highly anisotropic clay formation.
