Abstract

This article discusses the ‘love of humanity’ value and its meanings in Hebrew-language and literature school readers (textbooks) in state elementary schools, grades 2–6, from 1954 to the present day. The changes that took place over seven decades reflect educational and sociocultural developments in Israel and the world, as manifested in three central aspects: (a) Definition of the ‘Other’; (b) The types of texts chosen by policymakers or editors; and (c) The value-based educational approach.
