Abstract
The basic principles of a variational method for calculating the precision of mechanisms based on treatment of the error of the system as the total variation of the position function are set forth. This makes possible consistent determination of all output-member position-error components irrespective of the type of input error. The computing procedure is illustrated with an example of a compound-cam mechanism.
