Abstract
The record on directed and subsidised credit to farmers has been poor. There is little evidence that it has a favourable impact on agricultural productivity. Policy reforms directed at the institutional structure of individual rural economies should be backed by careful analysis of interest rates and an assessment of successful group lending or cooperative schemes. -M.Amos
