Incipient motion (Pickup) of single particles in horizontal conveying systems

Abstract

Determination of the pickup velocity is one of the key parameters for design of pneumatic and hydraulic conveying systems. This work presents experimental results and empirical analysis of incipient motion (pickup) of single particles in horizontal conveying systems for a variety of particulate solids. Additionally, results found in the literature for incipient motion of individual particles in gases and liquids were taken into account in the analysis. It was found that all results of single particle pickup velocity could be presented with a high accuracy by a simple function between Reynolds and Archimedes numbers. Furthermore, the force balance on the individual particle showed that in the case of large particles the motion starts by rolling or sliding for spherical and non spherical particles, respectively, and by blowing away (suspension) for fine powders. Therefore, the friction coefficient should be taken into account for large particles by modifying the Archimedes number. In this way, all experiments could be described by a single correlation with reasonably high accuracy.
