Abstract
The effect of clay counterion type on shaly sand conductivity is of considerable interest in well log evaluation. This paper describes measurements of the complex conductivity of typical sandstones with different clay counterions. The experimental procedures and results for the in-phase and out-of-phase equivalent counterion conductivity are presented. Observations are made concerning anomalous dielectric constants in shaly sands. The paper concludes with calculations of equivalent conductivity of sodium and calcium exchange cations in mixed electrolyte solutions based on clay ion exchange equilibria.
