Abstract

The results of direct modulation of a tunable grating coupler sampled reflector (GCSR) laser were presented. The effects of direct modulation on wavelength stability and on the SMSR (side mode suppression ratio) were experimentally investigated and their influence on system performance was evaluated. Results showed that a strong coupling between the laser sections due to chirp and electrical crosstalk results in mode instability, mode hopping, and average SMSR degradation.
