Influence of the surface tilt angle on the spatially periodic distortions in super-twisted nematic displays

Abstract

The structure of the stripes in super-twisted nematic displays in the tilted layers was studied and the conditions for their disappearance was determined. The ranges of the voltage and of the tilt angle for which the stripes arise were calculated for the twist angles ranging from 180° to 270°. The sense of the deviation compatible with the sense of the tilt was favored and the corresponding part of the stripe was found to be wider. The results show that the periodic deformation appears in a super-twisted structure because of the free energy minimum corresponding to it is deeper than that of the homogeneous deformation.
