Abstract
A serial study was carried out on 154 patients with rheumatic cardiac lesions who had received a full course of therapy to ascertain the degree of disorders of blood circulation and the degree of activity of the rheumatic process. The influence of different types of antirheumatic therapy was studied in 69 patients. It was demonstrated that the degree of normalization of blood coagulation indices and resistance of capillaries directly depended upon the therapeutic effect attained. These indices can help in assessing the efficacy of the treatment or determining whether further treatment is necessary. The tendency to normalization of blood coagulation indices and resistance of capillaries was more marked in patients with a maximal activity of the rheumatic process than in those with minimal activity. Not only anticoagulants but also antirheumatic and symptomatic drugs can serve as means of preventing thromboembolic complications. They favourably influence the course of the disease, the function of the blood coagulation system and the condition of the vessel wall.
