Abstract
Cases of defective piled foundations both in South Africa and abroad are reported and the reasons for the defects reviewed. Such case histories have drawn attention to the need for quality control especially of high performance pile foundations and diaphragm walls often constructed under difficult ground conditions. Nondestructive concrete integrity testing techniques, currently carried out to meet this need, are described and compared.
