Abstract
An inter-laboratory study is in progress on the effects of different sample preparation methods and X-ray diffraction settings on illite "crystallinity' (IC) and crystallite size determinations. First results obtained on whole rock standard material are reported. Despite the fact that IC data from different laboratories are not directly compatible due to strong numerical deviations, very good correlations can be drawn between the data sets. This enables comparisons of the measurement scales used by the various research groups. Such comparisons reveal that not all working definitions of the anchizone are equivalent. -Authors
