    Abstract

The clinical course of a pregnant woman with a retained intrauterine device (IUD) was complicated by preterm labor and intraamniotic infection with Candida albicans. A review of the literature disclosed an unfavorable outcome for pregnancies with a retained IUD and infection with Candida. Therefore, diagnostic amniocentesis for evaluation of the bacteriologic status of the amniotic cavity should be considered seriously for every pregnant woman with preterm labor and a retained IUD.
