Intraocular lens implantation in children

Because of the optical problems involved in the correction of monocular aphakia in children after the extraction of congenital or traumatic cataracts, attention has been turned to the use of intraocular lens implantations. The experience in eight children, two after congenital cataracts, and six as a secondary procedure after traumatic cataracts, is presented. Results were satisfactory in six of the cases, but in two children with traumatic cataracts severe amblyopia could not be overcome. No complications related to the intraocular lens were encountered. Because of the satisfactory initial results the authors feel that intraocular lens implantation can be considered as an alternative in children with congenital or traumatic cataracts.
