Abstract

Over the last few years, the world of clinical and environmental microbiology experienced a revolution with the introduction of new diagnostic technologies. In this book, we will review advanced technologies currently used in microbiology, their clinical applications and future prespectives. The chapter ahead will introduce basic definitions and provide an outlook of the topics covered in the book, with special focus on genomic-based technologies. We will also discuss how the various diagnostic methods are integrated in the microbiology workflow.
