Abstract
In the present work using the EPR method we have studied the state of the paramagnetic centres in various fractions of Azotobacter vinelandii containing an active nitrogen-fixing complex. On exposure to specific reagents of nitrogen fixation in the EPR spectrum of the nitrogen-fixing complex we observed changes which may indicate the participation of iron in the stage of activation of molecular nitrogen. From comparison of the EPR spectra of the native and denatured samples of the nitrogen-fixing complex it is postulated that in the native state Mo atoms are close to other paramagnetic centres.
