Abstract

Speaking in October 2005 at a program called “A
World without ZIONISM,” Iranian president
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared that the Jewish
state must “vanish from the page of time” in order
630 Ir Amim: For an Equitable and Stable Jerusalem with an Agreed Political Future for a Palestinian state to be established. This type
of bellicose anti-Israel statement, reminiscent of
earlier speeches by the late Ayatollah Khomeini,
had rarely been voiced by top Iranian officials
since the 1979 revolution that toppled the Shah’s
regime. Fearful of mounting international outrage,
and alarmed by additional hate-filled speeches by
Ahmadinejad, the Iranian government backed off
from the president’s statement but reaffirmed
Iran’s continued commitment to a “just” resolution
of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
