Jakes, A.G., Egypt’s Occupation: Colonial Economism and the Crises of Capitalism: [Review]

Research output: Contribution to journalBook/Arts/Article review

Abstract

Egypt’s Occupation is an important contribution to our understanding of the British socioeconomic and political management of this country since 1882 and until the First World War. The study of colonialism and nationalism as politics and, after the cultural turn, their analysis as cultural and identity politics has long dominated Egyptian (and Middle Eastern) historiography of the period. Such research often glossed over the economic roots of colonialism and nationalism as studied by an earlier generation of economic historians such as Roger Owen and Robert Tignor. [from the review]
