Abstract
Basic results of convection theory are presented for the case where the liquid in a gravity field is heated strictly from below. These results are then used for investigating the steady convection in the case of a nearly vertical temperature gradient, and the stability of solutions obtained is investigated. It is shown that near a certain critical Rayleigh number R//0 the liquid's motion is stable, although an abnormal behavior occurs near R//0. Besides this basic solution branch, two other branches (bifurcation) appear to the right of R//0, one of which is unstable and the other is metastable. Results obtained for an arbitrary closed cavity are illustrated by the results of a numerical experiment carried out in a horizontal circular cylinder (plane problem).
