Abstract

The author reports the lessons learned after five years as chairman of an academic surgical department in Israel. He describes the challenge of organizing a disparate team of professionals into a cohesive unit without sacrificing both the quality of service rendered to the general population and the quality of education offered to the surgical residents. The author lists 15 recommendations for a newly appointed chairman.
