Abstract
The hypotensive effect of low-dose guanfacine and methyldopa was compared in 73 outpatients, aged 32-65 yr, with mild to moderate hypertension. The degree of effect on diastolic blood pressure was similar for both drugs. However, guanfacine was more potent in reducing systolic blood pressure than methyldopa, especially in the elderly patients. The low dose of guanfacine only caused mild side effects.
