Abstract

A strong rhombohedral distortion takes place in the TbCo2 Laves compound below its magnetic ordering temperature. The analysis of the low-temperature powder diffraction spectra enabled the determination of a giant magnetostriction coefficient, λ111, of the order of 3×10-3 at 80 K.
