Abstract
The low-temperature molar specific heat of a layered KDy(WO4)2 crystal is investigated in the temperature range 0.86-20 K. The characteristic Debye temperature is calculated. A broad anomaly of the specific heat with a peak at T=6.38∓0.02 K is observed; it is identified with a structural phase transition induced by the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect. The fact that the specific heat increases as the temperature is lowered at T<2 K indicates that the system is approaching magnetic ordering (at a temperature below the investigated range).
