Abstract

The archaeological ruins of Masada are located on top of a raised rock-mass, near the southwestern shores of the dead sea.

The archaeological ruins of Masada are located on top of a raised rock-mass, near the southwestern shores of the Dead Sea. The remains are concentrated primarily over the northern part, which is a rhomboid-shaped flat plateau, about 600 m (N-S) by 300 m (E-W), and surrounded, save for one spot, by sheer cliffs.

The dramatic story of Masada, related solely by Josephus, the Jewish historian of the Second Temple period, coupled with the excavation of the remains of Masada, have made it one of the most famous archaeological sites in Israel.
