Abstract

We present a novel approach for the estimation of one-way delays between neighboring nodes without time synchronization in the network. The approach is based on the maximum entropy principle and is taking into account the asymmetric nature of the network and links, and the fact that traffic flows are not necessarily the same in both directions. Our approach is based on conducting multiple simple delay measurements among pairs of nodes, and estimating the one-way delays by maximizing the value of an entropy based objective function. The procedures described in the paper provide estimation for both the fixed part (i.e., propagation) and the variable part (i.e., queueing) of a link one-way delay. These procedures are easy to implement and use the existing measurement mechanisms already used in the Internet (NTP, ICMP) with no modifications. Numerical examples show the advantages of the proposed estimation schemes.
