Abstract

The optimal motion of a piston in a cylinder containing a gas, pumped with a given rate of heating is determined for maximal work production. Reversibility is not a criterion for high efficiency in finite time. The efficiency reaches the classical thermodynamic bound for infinitely slow processes.
