Abstract
This paper situates the Israeli public educational system in the broadercontext of colonizing educational systems, and explores the particularavenues through which it serves the Jewish settler state project andestablishes a colonial educational hegemony. Public education in Israelis legally mandated to promote the values of Jewish culture and loyaltyto the Jewish state. At the same time, its policy and contentsystematically instill racially derogatory attitudes towards thePalestinian citizens of Israel among Jewish students, as a basis forfostering and perpetuating the deep-seated societal division betweenJews and Palestinians. In addition, the public educational systemeffectively maintains the cultural, socioeconomic, and politicalsubordination of Palestinian students through the substandard anddiscriminatory provision of resources, programs and services, and theimposition of aims, goals and curricula that alienate Palestinianstudents. Consequently, their levels of educational achievement arelower than that of their Jewish counterparts. As such, the Israeli publiceducational system plays an essential role in consigning Palestiniancitizens to the social, economic and political margins of society. TheIsraeli educational system is designed to control both the PalestinianArab minority and Jewish majority, and to maintain an unbridgeabledivide – in support of the Zionist settler state vision. Until this visionis called into question, the educational system will not change.
