Abstract

The technique of impinging streams, recently applied for mixing of solids, resulted in three types of continuous pneumatic mixers which are reviewed in this paper. Two mixers are of the type of two-impinging streams (TIS) and one mixer is of the type of four-impinging streams (FIS). The major advantage of these mixers, in comparison to other available mixers such as the fluidized-bed, the spouted-bed mixer etc. , lies in that they are less energy-demanding devices. In addition, they exhibit simplicity of operation, segregation phenomena are absent, steady-state conditions are obtained within a few seconds, start-up does not require excess energy above the steady-state demands, and the quality of the mixture with respect to product composition is quite uniform. All above-mentioned properties make the impinging-streams mixer a very attractive tool for mixing of solids and powders.
