Abstract

Erosion of pipe bends during pneumatic conveying of solid particles was studied in this paper using computational fluid dynamics, coupled with Lagrangian particle tracking code (CFD-DEM). The simulations incorporates single particle erosion model which was developed by Huang et al.[1]. The model is discussed and modified to obtain a better agreement with experimental data. The effect of pipe bend material and bend radius on the bend erosion was investigated. It appears that short radius bend suffer more severe erosion than long radius bends regardless of the pipe material. The wear patterns on the bend wall for both materials that were examined, i.e. aluminum and SAE-1055 steel are similar, although aluminum bend erosion is considerably higher.
