Abstract

Momentum transfer to and elementary excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate was studied using a time-dependent optical potential. The mean-field dynamics of the condensate was also calculated and determine the resulting condensate momentum in the z direction. It was found that at lower values of momentum transfer interference effects play a role in the dynamics and can produce additional maxima and minima in the spectrum.
