Abstract

A qualitative analysis of the threshold behaviour of plane smectic C layers in external fields is made. All possible relative orientations between the liquid crystal, the boundaries and the field vector are considered. Arbitrary material constants are assumed in the uniaxial approximation. The conditions for first- and second-order transitions are given.
