Abstract
The first measurements of the stochastic motion of individual monomers within isolated polymer coils were presented. Single- and double-stranded DNA were used as models of semiflexible and flexible polymers. The internal motion in single stranded DNA was controlled by the hydrodynamic interactions between monomers. The results show that the kinetic behavior of single stranded DNA is consistent with the generally accepted Zimm theory of polymer dynamics, and the kinetic behavior of double stranded DNA is in good agreement with the Rouse model.
