Abstract
In this paper, the principle of Monte Carlo calculations is briefly discussed and the usefulness for this problem is explained. Three techniques of Monte Carlo computations are discussed. These are the simple Monte Carlo calculation, the spatial heterogeneity transform and correlated calculations. Other techniques in Monte Carlo are briefly mentioned. Nuclear well logging techniques applicable to characterization of soils, can be used not only to measure water content and density but also to find concentrations of various elements, from rare earths to metals to the highly abundant calcium, aluminum and silica, and other elements in rocks and soils. However, the commonly used probes in civil engineering are the neutron-thermal neutron log for moisture and the gamma-gamma log for density.
