Mt. Arod - An Early Cretaceous basanitic volcano with a fossil lava lake

Abstract

Mt. Arod is a volcano of Early Cretaceous age, located in Makhtesh Ramon, Southern Israel. In spite of its Early Cretaceous age, the Mt. Arod volcano is well preserved and exposed so that the reconstruction of the volcano and the evaluation of its history is possible. The following development stages were distinguished: (1) A phreatomagmatic activity leading to the construction of a tuff cone 60 m high and about 1200 m in diameter; (2) Lava eruption of the shield volcano type during which a lava flow section about 110 m thick erupted, increasing the height of the cone to about 200 m and the diameter to about 2000 m; (3) Doming of the structure due to subvolcanic intrusion, increasing the height of the cone to about 250 m; and (4) Filling of the crater with a lava lake about 125 m thick and 600 m in diameter. The eruptive activity was associated with subvolcanic intrusion of stocks and dikes. The composition of the rocks ranges from basanite to nephelinite.
