This invited paper presents an overview of our published work on integral imaging [1-38], and its effectiveness in sensing and imaging in degraded environments. We start by presenting an overview of the principle of operation of integral-imaging and its potential as a 3D imaging and display method. Our focus will be on multidimensional integral imaging systems for optical sensing and imaging for a variety of applications particularly in degraded environments. These applications include three-dimensional (3-D) visualization, seeing through obscurations, automated human gesture recognition, sensing and detection in turbid water, material inspection, and long-range imaging. Multidimensional integral imaging systems use many degrees of freedom to record, reconstruct, and process the captured scene and to obtain the desired information. The available degrees of freedom used in our experiments include polarimetric, temporal, photon flux, multispectral, time and space multiplexing, etc. We present experimental results using multi-dimensional integral imaging for various applications for depth estimation, long wave and mid wave IR imaging, 3D polarimetric imaging for object shape and material identification, dynamic integral imaging, low light level imaging, underwater sensing and detection in turbid water, etc. [1-38].
