Abstract
We present the results of studies of the structure of materials after friction tests (steels with different hardness, tested in pairs with copper). The results of roentgenographic studies are compared with the contacting surface roughness change. On the basis of the obtained data we note a connection between the structure changes and the roughness. From the results of electron microscope studies we conclude that the contact pressures on the different contact spots are nonuniform. We propose an explanation for the change of the wear intensity in the running-in period as a function of the orientation of the initial surface roughness, based on fragmentation of the metal surface layers.
