Nature of the Magnetic Radula in Chitons from Eilat on the Red Sea

Abstract

IT has been noted1,2 that the radula (rasping tongue) of certain chitons, molluscs, are ferromagnetic. Examples of Polyplacophora in which the magnetism is reported to be caused by magnetite in the dentical caps are species of Cryptochiton, Chiton, Acanthopleura, and Mopalia1 and Chaetopleura apiculata2.
