Abstract
An easy-to-check necessary condition for exponential stability, with a prescribed convergence rate, for linear state space systems, is introduced. The case where this condition is sufficient as well, is characterized. As a by-product, this result suggests that, the notion of `slowly varying state-space systems', commonly used in literature, is mathematically not natural to the problem of exponential stability.
