Abstract

The Negev desert became Israel's frontier zone when the country was created in 1948 and will again assume a frontline significance when Israel withdraws from the Sinai as promised in 1982. The area has enormous strategic importance lying as it does near the junction of 3 continents and with access to 3 seas. It will however have to absorb all the defensive and offensive military equipment and personnel poured into the Sinai by Israel since 1967. -E.Turner
