Abstract

The results of studies of the copper structure forming during sliding friction at various depths from the surface are presented. It is shown that, in spite of the specific nature of the plastic deformation, the general patterns of structure formation in bcc and fcc metals are presented during friction. The magnitude of the deformation successively increases with approach to the surface and under the investigated test conditions is maximum in the surface layer, where a developed fragmental structure is formed. On the basis of a comparison of the results of studies of the structure forming during friction and of the bulk plastic deformation, it is concluded that the cause of the formation of a developed fragmental structure during friction is the cyclic character of the deformation.
