Abstract

In this paper, we describe a new approach for augmented reality on mobile devices. Our focus is on providing high-fidelity photorealistic images to the user, thus accepting to lose the real-timeproperty of other approaches. We describe a system that allows the user to take a picture of an area of interest (e.g. with his camera-phone), send it to a server where he can also configure the result and finally to receive the image back from the server with a photo-realistically rendered and seamlessly integrated artificial object. We desigened and implemented a prototypical application end evaluated its' functionality and usability. The paper covers concept, system architecture, implementation and evaluation as well as proposed future work and applications.
