Neutron diffraction study of residue HNO3-graphite intercalation compound

The results of a neutron diffraction study of a residue HNO3 intercalated in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite are reported for a sample containing a mixture of stage-3 and stage-4 residue compounds. The NO3 groups are found to be tilted at a small angle with respect to the graphite planes at room temperature.
