Abstract
The mechanisms that control autoimmune diseases are still a mystery. Many major issues related to the etiology of the diseases, the nature of immune mechanisms that mediate pathogenicity, the causes of perpetuation in the clinical manifestations of the disease, and modes of interaction between immunological, environmental and genetic factors in the host are still unknown. However, there have been major technological breakthroughs to approach these issues. These include the development of monoclonal antibodies, continuous T cell lines/clones, recombinant cytokines and their antogonists, and the technology of recombinant DNA. All these developments helped to construct some of the parts of the 'mosaic of autoimmunity'. This paper presents some of the recent development in the field of autoimmunity.
