Abstract
A new device has been developed for the direct conversion of an electrical signal to an optical image. This device utilizes a CCD array and an MOS readout structure to transfer signal charge to a liquid crystal layer. This light valve is primarily intended for coherent optical data processing applications but this spatial modulator is potentially useful for large screen display applications. A fully operational 64 multiplied by 64 element CCD light valve has been fabricated and demonstrated. This device has exhibited an optical spatial resolution of 12 lines across the entire frame and an optical contrast in excess of 50:1.
