Abstract
A new model for estimating the linear coefficient of expansion ( alpha ) of oxide glasses is reviewed. The model utilizes a set of semi-empirical parameters based on the ionic radius (r), charge (Z) and electronegativity (EN) of modifier ions within a particular glass and normalized to a reference modifier, PbO. Linear coefficients of expansion calculated from this model are within plus or minus 15% of measured values. The application of this model to low melting lead-zinc borosilicate glasses is presented and a comparison made with earlier models described in the literature. Other multicomponent glasses important for microelectronic applications are also considered in light of the model.
