Abstract

A charge density wave system near commensurability and with strong damping is considered, as a model for NbSe3. The observed threshold field is associated with depinning of a commensurate part of the charge density, while the excess charge, in form of phase kinks, contributes just to the ohmic conductivity. The characteristic length associated with the frequency generation is one lattice constant.
