Abstract

Polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) affects dispersion-managed (DM) solitons in the same way that it affects conventional nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) solitons. However, unlike the latter, the DM solitons have a novel mechanism by which they trap some part of the linear radiation and keep it in their vicinity over long distances. This trapped part of the radiation does not contribute to the decrease of the SNR, and hence a DM-soliton-based transmission system can be operated over a longer distance than a conventional NLS soliton system can be.
