    Abstract

Childhood and adolescent obesity are risk factors for poor health later in life as well as decreased life expectancy. This short communication reviews literature on obesity in Israel and examines several recent studies, which have clearly demonstrated rising rates of childhood and adolescent obesity similar in magnitude to those trends observed in other Westernized nations. It is incumbent upon relevant authorities within Israel to reverse these trends so as to prevent the long-term adverse health consequences associated with childhood and adolescent obesity. We recommend initiating a national educational campaign to promote exercise and healthy eating. This campaign would target children and adolescents and would rely upon evidence based guidelines for diet and exercise.
