Abstract
The article discusses the need of children to be themselves in the U.S. It stresses that the need of a child to be one's self is neglected by advocates of children's rights due to the preoccupation of the Western culture with material progress. It outlines the role of parents in the prevention of ethical and intellectual numbing of their children.
